Handcrafted by the alchemy of sand-cast metal and beeswax-coated linen, the Alter pendant lamp by Studio Kaytar symbolizes the unity of matter, spirit, and energy. These sculptural lightworks take their form from alchemic symbols. Like alchemy, which transforms matter and spirit, Kaytar aims to change materials and imbue them with new life.
The spheres are solid brass, hand sand-cast, and left raw to develop a natural patina with a living presence. The shade, constructed from flax linen, has been plant-dyed with ceriops and coated in beeswax to create a sculptural quality that emits the soft scent of beeswax to delight the senses. The circular form and materials used in the Alter works represent completeness and unity, symbolizing the constant transformation and evolution of matter and energy. The solid metal spheres reflect the idea that all elements and forces in the universe are part of a greater whole, embodying the eternal cycle of creation, destruction, and transformation.
This solid metal piece is sand-cast by hand. The unique ripples and pitting in the material are to be celebrated for their individual beauty. Raw aluminum, brass, and bronze will naturally develop a patina over time, adding to their inherent beauty. If desired, a high-quality metal polish can restore its original brightness and shine.
The Flax linen has been hand-coated with Beeswax. When ruched or pinched, this sensory material forms unique crease marks, adding to its perfectly imperfect sculptural beauty. To even out the texture and restore the original condition, gently warm the fabric with a blow dryer to soften the wax. Enjoy the scent as the fabric heats up.
Our textiles are naturally dyed by hand using plant extracts. Any inconsistencies in color mimic nature and add to the unique beauty of this piece. Dyeing by hand requires many steps to achieve the depth of the organic colors you see.
This lamp comes with a brass metal ceiling rose/stem (not pictured), linen cable, and steel suspension. It must be installed by a professional electrician. The bulb socket is compatible with an E27 bulb.
