Abyss is Ceren Gürkan’s tribute to canyons — vast forms carved slowly by long-term erosion, leaving cliffs exposed on valley walls. Their scale and mystery are the starting point for the series, an attempt to put into physical form the feeling of standing at the rim of a canyon, on the edge of a rock, or in the wet darkness of a cave: big and small, safe and in danger, silent and loud, all at once.
Rather than working toward a recognisable shape, Gürkan builds each piece around organic, almost coincidental structures, made in a meditative state with music playing and a quiet mind — a process that shapes the work as much as any sketch would. Each piece in the Abyss series is handmade from stoneware and produced as a one-of-a-kind object; no two are alike.
