Description

Herbarium is a series of wall lights inspired by the forty-year-old herbarium kept by the artist’s mother, and by the place of floristry in his family’s life. The plants on show were gathered along the Vistula riverbank and prepared by Mateusz and his mother using a self-developed technique, each specimen preserving a season and a shared memory.

This piece carries an Eryngium specimen — hand-harvested, and, like every plant in the series, one of a kind. The object is touch-sensitive: a gentle tap at the base of the frame brings up a warm, ambient light from behind the specimen, revealing details of the plant as a record of a specific moment in the past.

Herbarium is cordless, powered by an integrated Li-Ion battery rechargeable via a USB-C port discreetly set into the base; a charger is included. It mounts with a dedicated system, with wall hooks and instructions included.

Mateusz Wappa (born in 1999 in Warsaw) is a multidisciplinary designer and artist focused on exploring the relationship between people and nature as well as searching for the perfect ethos for his artistic practice. Son of a master florist – his mother, former disciple and a follower of two renowned designers: Tomek Rygalik and Marcin Rusak. He considers them both as his mentors. His work is deeply rooted in the use of raw, organic materials – such as leaves, twigs, and herbs – integrating them directly into the heart of each piece. Committed to the principles of responsible design, Mateusz and his team create handcrafted pieces that are purposefully functional while remaining true works of art.
