    Description

    The design makes tangible the abstract concept of proximity without convergence. A magnetic sphere holds two curved sheets apart, defining an interval and allowing for modular arrangement. The word asymptote comes from the Greek ασύμπτωτος, meaning: not falling together.

    Asymptote Side-Table embodies the idea of the mathematical asymptote. An asymptote is a line that a curve may approach without ever reaching. A concept that requires reasoning in abstract mathematical terms rather than physical intuition. To the eye, a curve and a line may appear to merge as they draw close, since their physical marks blur together. In mathematics, lines and curves are idealized forms with no width, so no matter how near they seem, they never truly meet.

    The curves are held in place by a series of magnetic spheres, allowing the final form to be adjusted or modified as desired. A solid stainless steel disc at the top anchors the composition.
