Description

The MANGO wool kilim is a handmade, decorative tapestry from the NORD-SUD collection, designed by Jadzia Lenart. The kilim can be used as a rug on the floor or as a decoration on the wall.

The NORD-SUD kilim collection serves as a memoir of travels, encapsulating a plethora of colors, scents, and fleeting emotions—a mosaic of memories etched in the mind. It symbolizes the convergence of divergent experiences between two individuals in close proximity—a creative, nostalgic journey capturing the ethereal northern lights and the intense southern sun.

Jadzia Lenart and Wika Podolec spent years gathering inspiration, repeatedly returning to beloved places. Memories of smells, tastes, colors and shapes were poured onto paper and then thread by thread woven into kilim form. The kilim as an object is long-lived and timeless, which has made every piece from the NORD-SUD collection a kind of postcard or personal souvenir from a trip.

The wool yarn used in production comes from textile recycling. It is leftover from the mass production of carpets and can not be reused in industry. However, it is an excellent material for handwork. The handcrafted production gives a second life to these fully valuable materials. Choosing the kilim technique also minimizes waste per kilim to less than a handful of biodegradable wool and cotton offcuts. Some of the wool yarn has been dyed by hand, so each piece may have a slightly different texture and shade within each color section.
Each wool kilim from the NORD-SUD collection is signed; bearing a serial number and the names of the designer and craftsman. The handmade technique makes each piece unique. 2% of income is intended to charity.

About Tartaruga Studio Visit Showroom →

Tartaruga is a small weaving studio founded in Lodz, Poland in 2017 by Jadzia Lenart and Wiktoria Podolec. As concious designers and craftsmen we’ve decided to stand in opposition to the mass textile industry and all its consequences. That’s why all of our products are handmade with traditional tools and techniques. On a daily basis, Tartaruga’s atelier creates handwoven contemporary kilims, rugs and wall hangings. We’re one of the founders of NÓW. New Craft, which gathers contemporary Polish craftsmen. Tartaruga means “a turtle”. It’s very slow but also unique and long-lived. The same words could be used to describe our kilims.
