Its shape is inspired by my childhood in Portugal, where my mother would wash our family‘s clothes by hand in a small village‘s communal washhouses.
These public washing facilities, constructed from concrete, featured distinctive angled basins with ribbed surfaces, images that have stayed with me ever since. The measuring cup reflects the geometry and tactile qualities of those basins, evoking a sense of nostalgia and everyday ritual.
Produced using the traditional sand casting technique, this piece embodies both craft and memory.
The result is an object that transcends pure functionality, transforming a simple household tool into a narrative-rich, sculptural piece that invites reflection and tactile appreciation.
Building on the formal and conceptual foundations of the measuring cup, the design evolved further and gave rise to the Espressocup 417.
Here, the underlying geometric language and sensory qualities are translated into a new context, while preserving the spirit and memory embedded in the initial object. Espressocup 417 is a meticulously hand-cast vessel, weighing 417 grams and crafted from solid bronze. To enhance both its appearance and durability, each cup is finished with a 99.9% pure silver plating.
The robust materiality and substantial feel in the hand invite a special, tactile encounter with the ritual of coffee drinking.
Each piece is produced through traditional artisanal casting methods, resulting in subtle surface variations that emphasize the unique, handcrafted quality of the cup.
All works are embossed with Vogel Studio.
