GAINCUBE by Voidfil Studio is a portable, wearable Bluetooth speaker created from a repurposed Nintendo GameCube console. The speaker stands on four custom 3D-printed feet modeled after GameCube controller parts. Produced as a limited series in collaboration with Tyler Durden, each piece reconfigures the GameCube as a contemporary boombox.
The idea came from lifting a broken GameCube by its handle and noticing how its silhouette echoed a vintage boombox. GAINCUBE became a study in re-enclosure: reusing either the shell or the circuitry of a device, transplanting container or contents to activate a new use and meaning. It is a readymade for the e-waste era. This throughline runs across my practice, where obsolete technologies and familiar consumer forms are re-situated to shift their meaning. Here a nonfunctional console becomes a portable speaker, its latent potential revealed in the simple act of carrying it.
The “power” light has been reconfigured to switch on with the speaker, while the “open disc” and “reset” buttons have been rewired to serve as Bluetooth pairing and volume control. Only a handful of GAINCUBEs exist, finished in different colorways depending on the consoles we were able to source.
The speaker can be used plugged in or wireless (battery life ~4hrs). Includes charging cable (120V AC) and runs on bluetooth. Color of chain, enclosure, and LED may differ based on availability.
