Dune, an Italian tapestry of excellent craftsmanship. For its creation, Atelier Nuanda turned to one of the world’s most important textile craftsmen, Arazzeria Scassa, creating a unique piece of work.
The Arazzeria was founded in 1957 in Asti’s ancient Carthusian Monastery. Today, as in the past, skilful master weavers produce each Scassa tapestry using 17th Century looms. These works of art are testimony to an outostanding know-how handed down over the past two generations.
Thus a collaboration was born, a spokesman for the trades linked to the territory. A textile work created using the 16th Century masters’ traditional high heddle technique, mixing together yarns of different colours and shades, in the same passage as if it were a single thread, creating unique shadings and nuances. An artisanal manufacture, marked by slow process, where the attention given to preparing the loom, the gracefulness of manual gestures and the careful combination of colours and yarns give life to a product steeped in values of an ancient culture. The craftsmanship linked to the mastery of the works of Ettore Sottsass and other great artists of the 20th century, has given rise in over 65 years of history, to a vast archive of fine wool yarns from Biella. Material selected by the Atelier, for the creation of the project.
This weaving technique uses selected “Biellese Wool”. A fibre of extraordinary quality, zero-kilometre fibre, produced by sheep reared in Piedmont using the method of nomadic herding, based on the change of season and the rhythm of nature. A perfect blend of the different arts, a manifesto of man and his environment.
On the surface a longitudinal trace runs through the chiaroscuro nuances of the habitat impressing a fleeting outline, a sign of the passing of the nomad soul. Light and decisive, it faces the dunes that surround it, laying bare the umber earth that hosts its steps.
A one-of-a-kind tapestry, handmade with Biellese wool from over 65 years of history linked to the mastery of Ettore Sottsass’ works.
