Cumulo is a luminous object by Valentine Maurice exploring the relationship between light, time and our perception of the sky. This aluminium version takes the form of an artificial window, a luminous surface where subtle gradients of blue, violet and white evoke the changing atmosphere of daylight.
The project grows from Maurice’s ongoing research into natural light and circadian rhythms: daylight’s shifting colour, intensity and temperature give cues that help regulate our biological clock, yet indoor life increasingly cuts us off from them. Cumulo brings an interpretation of the sky back into the home, translating its atmosphere through light rather than reproducing it as an image. Colours appear, merge and disappear across the translucent surface as a continuously evolving luminous landscape.
Its rounded geometry recalls both a window and a porthole, an opening onto an undefined exterior, though nothing sits behind the surface: light itself is the landscape. The aluminium frame, usually associated with industry and architecture, draws a precise, almost technical boundary around an immaterial phenomenon, its fixed solidity set against the changing light it holds.
