It is often the seemingly trivial objects that play minor roles in a scene — such as ladders, towels, tiles and pool noodles — that have the power to evoke memories due to their tactile appeal, peculiar yet recognisable shapes, and Proustian qualities. A glance or a touch can transport you elsewhere.
This concept forms the basis of the ongoing collaboration between Vienna-based object designer Laura Dominici and artist Basil Schu.
LAZY SWIM is a collection of playful objects reminiscent of swimming scenes. A ladder leading out of a pool invites you to sit down. Neatly stacked towels reveal themselves to be a seating sculpture made from paintings.
The first glimpse of their collaboration was Pool Bench, an outdoor bench made of stainless steel and pool noodles, which was presented at the inaugural COLLECTIBLE New York at WSA in September 2024.
The Pool Bench evolved into an entire collection. This was followed by Pool Seat, a shorter version of the bench; Pool Rug; Locker Key; Squishy Towel and Towel Stool.
The duo will be presenting their new Towel Stools at Collectible New York 2025. The stool challenges perception, as seemingly soft stacks of towels turn out to be made of slippery silicone pressed through fabric and combined with a plywood structure.
