Hazel Wave #3 is part of Darja Malesic’s Hazel Wave collection, built around a rare handcraft practiced by a small number of Slovenian artisans. Strips of hazel wood, cut yearly as part of the tree’s pruning regime — a practice that extends the tree’s life rather than harming it — are split, turned into ribbons, and woven using a centuries-old Slovenian basket-weaving technique into the light’s distinctive, softly pleated form.
The resulting wooden folds wrap and drape like fabric rather than reading as rigid wood, adapting an ancient craft into a more sculptural, contemporary shape. Hazel trees carry old associations with magic, wisdom, and insight in local folklore, which the collection quietly nods to.
