The B.S.P series began as research into recycling plastic by-products — its name a play on the B.L.T. club sandwich, standing for By-product, Solvent, and Plastic, the three materials behind the process. Working with the plastic flakes generated while CNC-machining and 3D-printing other design prototypes, the designer tested different solvents, plastic types, and reaction times in a physical chemistry lab, eventually finding that a specific plastic dissolves in organic solvent after a set period — and that small flakes or off-cuts from failed prototypes, with their larger surface area, dissolve fastest in a minimal amount of solvent.
As the solvent evaporates, the mixture solidifies into a form reminiscent of spilled cheese — an unusual texture that gives mass-production plastic a handcrafted, one-off quality. The same process was also used to cast a recycled plastic plate from larger discarded pieces, and can be applied across different shapes and colours.
Each piece in the B.S.P series is uniquely handmade and should be handled with care — take care not to bump the protruding texture. For indoor use only.
