The Rapallo kilim opens a series inspired by a meeting we had with renowned Warsaw restaurateur Justyna Kosmala. She is the owner and creator of the iconic Charlotte bistro and will be opening the LUPO culinary concept soon. Justyna and Splot share a passion for the Memphis Milano aesthetic, which defined the colorful design style of the 1980s and 90s. During this creative meeting, the Rapallo kilim was born, and it will decorate the lavishly designed interiors of an Italian restaurant in Warsaw’s Wola district. Piotrek Niklas, in his own unique way, transformed the realizations of such designers as Ettore Sottsass and Nathalie du Pasquier into his individual language of forms. Inspired by the amazing and unexpected space of the restaurant, Piotr used a refreshed, pastel color palette.
The art of kilim weaving has long been an integral part of Polish tradition and aesthetics. In contrast to many regions worldwide, where kilim design remains rooted in conventional, repetitive patterns, Poland has embraced this form of textile as a conduit for modernity since the early 1900s, serving as a medium for contemporary design and artistic expression.
Splot’s kilims are handcrafted in collaboration with two weaving centers that boast a unique heritage. The tradition of weaving in Bobowa, located near Kraków, dates back over 70 years.
In Bobowa, we craft our contemporary, expressive kilims with a dense, refined texture, woven on a linen warp. The wool we use is hand-spun, and its soft bouclé texture gives the kilims a subtle irregularity and depth, building their organic, unique character.
