Description

The FRAGMENTS collection by Estudio Material is an ongoing series that transforms fabrication residues from stone yards into unique sculptural objects. EM collaborates with quarries and fabricators in California, Mexico, and Italy to salvage stone remnants and designs each piece around hand-picked materials with the intention to preserve the stone’s found condition and express their raw beauty. The stone fragments are complemented by pristine metal surfaces which create a soft contrast and continue the dialogue between nature and the human-made embedded in much of EM’s work.

For the first edition, EM collaborated with American Soil and Stone, in Richmond, California. Damaso, founder and creative director of Estudio Material worked closely with the stone yard team and selected pieces of Winterset Limestone from Montana to create a series of pieces that showcase the as-found condition of the stone. Smooth surfaces, split edges, fabrication marks, and traces of extraction can be seen in one single object expressing its unique character and revealing the process of domestication of a natural material.

The untamed natural block acts as a weighted base to a contrasting delicate usable metal surface mechanically attached to the stone, accentuating its assembly and machine-made quality. Each piece combines simplicity with an authentic expression of materials, creating a conceptual bridge between nature and our living spaces. The complete collection, including side tables, seating, coffee tables, and water features, is designed for indoor and outdoor use.

All pieces are unique, signed, and numbered. Please contact us for accurate pricing and custom options.

About Estudio Material Visit Showroom →

Founded in San Francisco CA, Estudio Material is a creative practice led by Mexico City-born artist and designer Damaso Mayer. His work is rooted in a diverse background spanning industrial design, architecture, and landscape architecture. Growing up in a world of contrasts, Damaso lived on a working organic farm run by his mother, where he developed a profound connection to nature's cycles and processes. At the same time, his father's metal gasket fabrication facility exposed him to the precision and ingenuity of industrial production. This unique upbringing shaped Damaso's creative ethos, fostering a deep appreciation for both the organic and the manufactured. His artistic practice is defined by an exploration of often overlooked materials, with a particular fascination for the raw, the found, and the industrial. With a focus on sustainable practices and material exploration, Estudio Material reimagines conventional design by celebrating the beauty and potential of materials in their most authentic forms.
