Ceren Gürkan created the Abyss series after being captivated by canyons — landscapes shaped over long stretches of time by erosion, exposing dramatic cliffs along their valley walls. The series is her attempt to translate what it feels like to stand at a canyon’s rim, on the edge of a rock, or in the wet dark of a cave: a mix of big and small, safe and at risk, silent and loud.
The forms themselves are intentionally not easy to read at a glance — organic and almost accidental-looking, developed while Gürkan works in a meditative state with music playing and a quiet mind. Every piece in the series is handmade from stoneware and made as a one-of-a-kind object, so no two share exactly the same shape.
