12 Spectacular Space Age Storage Units (Designer Approved)

This tubular steel shelf forms part of the Series O.F.I.S by Lucas Muñoz, an ongoing research of industrial material’s potential for narrative. Taking the shape and mechanic properties of those interstitial materials as a starting point, he draws a line that crosses from practical means to what function a domestic environment requires.

Solid wooden credenza inspired by the shape of a lying jaguar. The body rests on 4 legs finished with carved wooden spheres representing the four cardinal points. 64 hemispheres are symmetrically distributed on the surface of the credenza’s soft-close doors.

Crotto is a bendable poplar wood bookcase. The manufacturing process inspired by violin-making gives the product a hollow body whose appearance is both massive and organic. All the parts are entirely made and assembled by hand in France.

Nopper is a modular system for building organizers, cupboards or desks. The concept originated by researching plastic building toy blocks for children and manifesting a functional model for the adult world.

As a whole, Object 00 is confusing. Sometimes it is a space age shelving unit for things, curiosities, and maybe some books and magazines. How will you use it?

“Footish Sideboard” is one of the pieces designed by Parasite 2.0 which concerns an artifacts’ potential to tell stories and to envision new paths for a collective living.

This space age shelving unit makes maximum use of the intrinsic qualities of its sole material: polycarbonate sheets. The transparent colors of the material mix in unexpected ways and we enjoyed the way the piece camouflaged the disorder of our work area.

“Plots” is a wooden composable storage system. Symmetric, disturbed, regular, fanciful, organized, in equilibrium, simple, destructured: the shelf can evolve from a small to a large dimension by multiplying the components.

The “Not only hollow” cabinet suspends solid wood in a low-resolution 3D printed shell. This pairing is autobiographical in nature.

Succession cabinet is dressed in leather and textile. The base is made of an innovative composition of materials which has been dressed in textile and leather and had ropes tied around it before being baked.

The legacy of Emir Uras’s architectural training and his focus on form are evident in his design for the “Whatamai” shelf. While the “Whatamai” shelf’s long, disc-like forms evoke an ambient world, its solid materiality, hand-crafted in walnut, root it in the physical.
