Curatorial Statement
Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, Mr. Lawrence studio, and Casalinghe di Tokyo set out an in-depth gastronomy research, guided by the UAE’s vast heritage and complex culture, reconnecting the food culture to sustainability whilst raising a new awareness on food preservation and table settings.
Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council in collaboration with the Emirati multi-disciplinary designer Reem Saif Almazrouei translate the gastronomy research into a collection of Emirati-inspired tableware of different weaving techniques and motifs inspired by the United Arab Emirates crafts heritage of Al Safafah (palm frond weaving) and Al Sadu (wool textile weaving).
Irthi’s craftswomen used their Safeefah weaving skills to recreate the traditional Makab (food covers ), trays using “Abu Falqah” technique, picnic bags using “Sayr Yaay” technique and baskets using “Dhuhoori” diamond-like technique in a strong and playful colour palette of hand dyed palm fronds in bright yellow, orange, lilac, and hues of pink and brown, lilac, and pink leather.
As a modern twist to compliment the traditional Safeefah-based Makab, camel leather trays were designed and embossed with unique Sadu motifs inspired by elements of the environment and animals. These motifs were originally used to distinguish Emirati tribal groups from one another; the patterns’ designs were a conceptual expression based on time and location.
This collection drop adds to the larger Thaya collection, consisting of the Safeefah mats designed by Ghaya Bin Mesmar, and a series of the Al Safafah chairs created by Ghaya Bin Mesmar in collaboration with Mermelada Estudio.
