The legacy of Emir Uras’s architectural training and his focus on form are evident in his design for the “Whatamai” shelf. Its abstract forms are curved and floating, evoking a sense of unlimited space; an interest in exploring, through abstraction, the dissonance between space that is lived and space that is intangible — the space of the cyber world, for example — characterizes Uras’ work. It is also reflected in his methodology, as he transforms his drawings and paintings into 3D computer images and then fabricates them in material form. While the “Whatamai” shelf’s long, disc-like forms evoke an ambient world, its solid materiality, hand-crafted in walnut, root it in the physical.
