Description

This object reflects a part of our heritage that is best translated with the french term “l’appel du vide“ and strongly connected to our time spending never ending nights inside various nightclubs, looking for our own boundaries in hedonism. Always hypnotised by the beauty of material in a look and feel our enthusiasm for rich materials grew early – and went hand in hand with everything unexpected.

Our intention is to create pieces that reflect our very own perception of a city that is the core of our inspiration – Berlin. Trying to capture everything in-between an emotion and visual aesthetic we want the result to be as changeable as Berlin is itself. At the same time we were searching for a silhouette that we understand as highly contemporary and that translates our understanding for form and shape. The object is meant to reflect our studios personality, our desire for aesthetics and our need for joy. In addition to that we wanted to find a way for working with strongly different materials that gained our interest in the last months of working and bring them into dialog within one object. The modular construction of each „Toy“ is meant to give its owner the opportunity to change the outer appearance in a way it feels most harmonic to him – keeping the overall idea of the specific object. In that sense you could say that there’s an interaction forced between the studio and the collector.

About the designer

VAUST Studio

VAUST IS A BERLIN-BASED DESIGN STUDIO WORKING IN THE INTERSECTION OF INTERIOR DESIGN, OBJECT DESIGN AND CREATIVE DIRECTION.   Our work aims to affect in whatever way. It wants to provoke and induce and leave its vis-à-vis altered. It is keen on keeping up with what will be while gathering inspiration from what has or could have been. In order to open well-known patterns up to reflection, we abstract and estrange them, turning them into something new and unseen, something rough and emotional, distinctive and intellectual, soft and brutal.

Presenting “PROXIMITY”, a collection created in collaboration with Southern Sweden Design Days showcasing a selection of new work from ten designers and studios. As a whole, the collection contemplates the notion of proximity, interconnection, and belonging. Whether through contemporary references to traditional crafts techniques; the use of locally sourced materials such as wool, lichen, steel, and wood; or playful visualisations of the notion itself, the selected pieces illustrate the importance of closeness, interconnection, and kinship in uncertain times. Featuring pieces by Andrea Santivanez, Andréason & Leibel, Ebba Lindgren, Förstberg Ling, Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir, Lab La Bla, Lisa Darland, Louise Hederström, Moa Lönn, and Studio M. Organised by Form/Design Center in Malmö, Sweden, Southern Sweden Design Days is an annual event currently in its second edition, which highlights sustainability, collaboration, development, and innovation in design. This year’s theme, as described by the event organisers, “[reflects] on the notion of being close – the connection between people, cities, countries, species, professions, etc”. The physical exhibition of “PROXIMITY” will take place at Lokstallarna, Södra Bulltoftavägen 51, 212 22 Malmö from 19 - 22 May 2022.
