These SHELVES were originally designed to display ceramics in the communal kitchen of a co-living project, the shelves were designed to bear some weight. As the client granted the designer full trust in the outcome of the design, the process itself challenged Esther De Vos to find the delicate balance between stability and simplicity.
A simple design does not automatically translate to a simple design process. The challenge of finding the right balance between a simple design and a sufficiently stable shelve turned out to be the biggest challenge. At the bottom of the shelves, two smaller vertical brackets add to the carrying capacity of the shelves, but maintain the visual simplicity of the design.
Keeping full control of this design process is one of the key elements in Esther De Vos’ work. As a designer and maker, De Vos welds every design herself. For the finishing layers, she prefers coating the design with a transparent varnish, to reserve the natural pattern of the hot rolled steel used in the design. This ensures every design is one of a kind.
