Sfär by Jochen Lavéno Mangelsdorff is a tealight holder composed of three parts. A two-part spherical shape in porcelain made in the porcelain factory in Lidköping, Sweden. A sheet of glass in between that is water-cut in Emmaboda, Sweden. The glass has a cut out hole on the inside making the glass into a lightguide for the tealight when lit. The light travels through the glass until it brakes on the matte outer edge where it refracts into a golden, glowing and pulsating halo.
The effect becomes graphically strong in several angles and is iconic for the this candle holder.
Sfär comes in five different version. Two rough matt glazes in the colors Red Soil and Dark Night. One natural porcelain color with a soft matt soda treatment cover for protection. The color is off-white and named White Sand. These finishes are contrasting the glossy surface of the glass. Two special developed shiny multicolor glazes, Midnight Blue and Ocean Blue for a more reflecting and spectacular approach.
I noticed that most candle holder don’t interact with the candle and the light. I wanted to create something that change and transform the light from the candle. At the same time I didn’t want it to be obvious to understand how the candle holder works at first sight.
A lot of sketches and different ideas came up during the design process until i finally came up with the idea of dividing the sphere and put a sheet of glass in between. As soon as I got the Idea I instantly knew this was going to be something special that invisibly transform the light. I feel very satisfied with the outcome of the candle holder with the strong effect you get on the outer edge when the tealight is lit at the same time as its not obvious why the edge is glowing when seeing the candle holder at first sight. It simply gives a magic feeling to it.
