HUI tiles and furniture are meticulously crafted from recycled oyster shells. By processing and mixing discarded shells collected from Korea’s coastal waters, we create durable materials that are shaped into tiles with refined textures. While numerous works engage with themes of nature and sustainability, our objective was to go beyond these concepts. To realize this vision, we developed three distinct tiles—H, U, and I—that enable a wide range of architectural applications. Our intention was to create not simply an object, but a modular unit that offers infinite design possibilities, much like how a single Lego piece can serve as the foundation for a complex structure.
Expanding on the modular and structural properties of the HUI tiles, we applied an architectural approach to the design of the HUI bench. This bench leverages the inherent strength and versatility of the tiles, resulting in a dynamic yet stable composition. By exploring the relationship between furniture and architecture, the design highlights the adaptability of the HUI tiles in forming a functional and sculptural piece. The bench exemplifies a fusion of aesthetic elegance and sustainable material use, reinforcing the potential of modular design in larger architectural contexts.
The color and length of the bench can be changed on request.
The piece can be used as a side or coffee table.
