Description

The sculptural lamp, inspired by the “Fiji Mermaid” artefact, is a captivating fusion of diverse materials that evokes the essence of myth and deception. Crafted from a mix of concrete, minerals, marbles, metals, resins and woods, it exudes a raw, earthy texture.
The incorporation of 3D-printed components and resin allows for intricate detailing, while wood and sawdust composite lend an organic warmth to the piece.
The lamp’s form mirrors the unsettling allure of the original Fiji Mermaid, a notorious hoax that blended the head of a juvenile spider monkey with the tail of a fish. This lamp similarly combines disparate elements into a cohesive whole, using blown plastic and tin to mimic the grotesque yet fascinating hybrid nature of the mermaid. A light fixture concealed within casts an eerie glow, highlighting the unexpected and whimsical use of a sunglasses lens as a focal point, perhaps reminiscent of the mermaid’s eye.
‘Fiji Mermaid’ not only illuminates but also invites reflection on the nature of belief and evidence. The Fiji Mermaid was once hailed as proof of a mythical creature, only to be later discredited. This lamp, in its eclectic materiality, serves as a modern-day reminder of how our understanding of history and truth is subject to the interpretations and tools of each era.
As a sculptural lamp, it stands as a testament to the narrative power of objects, blending past and present, reality and myth. It challenges viewers to consider how we construct and deconstruct stories, much like the mermaid itself, which once captivated imaginations and now symbolizes the fluidity of historical truth. The “Fiji Mermaid” lamp, with its rich tapestry of materials and thoughtful design, is more than just a source of light; it is a provocative piece of art that speaks to the enduring power of myth and the ever-evolving quest for understanding.

The lamp is fitted with a standard E14 bulb connection. It has a built-in on/off button. The plug is standard EU and can be refitted as appropriate.
