The Eocene Vessel is formed in sand-cast aluminum with a raw, stone-like surface that embeds two authentic Green River fish fossils as quiet evidence of ancient life. The vessel’s opening recalls a flower emerging from stone — an image of renewal set against geological permanence.
Part of the Eocene Collection, the work brings together fifty-million-year-old fossils and cast metal forms to bridge natural history with contemporary design. The fossils were discovered in Wyoming’s Green River formation, where delicate fish impressions remain preserved within layers of stone. Carefully integrated into the cast aluminum, these fragile traces of ancient life remain both visible and tangible.
The piece reflects an encounter with deep time — a moment when past and present converge within a single enduring form. Variations in fossil formation and casting texture make each vessel unique, shaped by both geological history and the casting process. Functioning as both vessel and artifact, the Eocene Vessel stands as a quiet relic of time.
