Description

“In a near future, when fossil fuels will be scare, oil will not be burnt away and wasted in energy and transport but reserved for high-value processes and products such as plastic manufacturing.” (Ray Hammond, futurist)

Plastic will be the legacy of humankind and has been hypothesized to act as the maker of the Anthropocene – the name of the current geochronological epoch in which humans have become the most important factor influencing biological, geological, and atmospheric processes on Earth.

“Ars Memorandi” has been designed with aesthetic concerns, combining technological progress with crafts, inspired from artfully crafted 16th-century collector’s pieces. This symbol of luxury stands in contrast to the choice of its materiality aiming to question how we perceive, use, and what we make from plastics today.

About the designer

“Revealing the relationships between people and objects is the aim of our approach. It allows us to see ourselves as part of a bigger picture - a complex system - we belong to and live in.” (Birgit Severin) “We create narrative objects which reflect about past and present while opening up to alternative futures. ” (Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo) Studio B Severin explores culture and society by re-designing objects and materials. The studio is based in Berlin and run by the French-German duo Birgit Severin and Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo. Objects are extensions of our body and mind, making this connection explicit is the aim of “studio b severin”s design approach. Based on research, taking psychological, anthropological, and philosophical questions into account, the outcomes are objects which through their function and aesthetic transmit their implicit message. Their work has been shown nationally and internationally at prestigious museums, biennales, and fairs. The studio collaborates with curators, galleries, and companies while sharing their vision and thoughts workshop and lectures.
