Curatorial Statement
Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, Mr. Lawrence, and Casalinghe de Tokyo set out in-depth gastronomy research, guided by the UAE’s vast heritage and complex culture, reconnecting the food culture to sustainability whilst raising a new awareness of food preservation and table settings.
Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council in collaboration with the Emirati designer Eman Al Rahma translate the gastronomy research into a collection of Emirati- inspired tableware items from Al Gargour craft, which was traditionally crafted by male artisans for fishing purposes, now repurposed and incorporated into the Emirati dining experience.
The collection consists of baskets handmade by male artisans using metal wireÙ‘ woven into contemporary patterns and knots that are fused by hand-weaved leather. To create a cohesive collection, centred on food preservation, a set of clay covers has been designed to complement the Gargour baskets.
