Pedestal Side Tables: From Vilde Hagelund’s Carved Series to Stone and Brass

Since antiquity, the pedestal has held up what a culture values most: statues, busts, offerings. Today, the same form has become one of the most versatile pieces of furniture in the home. A pedestal side table sits on a single solid base rather than legs, so it reads as a small sculpture while holding a lamp, a book or a cup.

The Pedestal series by Vilde Hagelund
Vilde Hagelund is an Oslo-based furniture designer with degrees in both multimedia technology and product design. She believes that material, form and function should be equally valued throughout a design process. Combining a crafter’s hand, an artist’s eye and a designer’s mind, she creates long-lasting, quality products. Her master’s thesis “Objectum” was nominated for the Designers’ Saturday Awards, Best Talents 2019, and she received a Design Scholarship from the Federation of Norwegian Industries the same year.
The Pedestal side table series (2019) consists of geometric parts made by machine. A hand-carved texture is then added to the surface for a tactile experience, enhancing the material agency and value of craft. In a way, the tables show how machine and hand can coexist to make rare products in a world of overconsumption and mass production.
The series has three variations: Pedestal Round, with a hand-carved base and a smooth, circular top; Pedestal Square, its opposite, with a smooth base and a hand-carved surface; and Pedestal 2.0, a low coffee table with a top supported by two legs rather than one, experimenting with construction, color and scheme.
The Pedestal series is no longer available on ADORNO, but its idea runs through every table below: a single, sculptural base that turns a practical object into something worth looking at.
What is a pedestal side table?
A pedestal side table is a small table supported by one central column, block or base instead of three or four legs. The form saves floor space, avoids legs that catch feet and chairs, and gives the piece a monolithic, sculptural presence. How to choose a pedestal side table
Height
Beside a sofa or armchair, aim for a top at or just below the height of the arm, roughly 50 to 65 cm. Taller pedestals of 70 cm or more suit display, holding a lamp, plant or sculpture at eye level.
Material

Top and base
A wide top makes a pedestal practical for drinks and books, while a narrow top turns it into a display plinth. Check that the base is heavy or wide enough for stability, especially in homes with children or pets.

How to style a pedestal table
Use a pedestal side table where legs would feel busy: beside a sculptural sofa, in a narrow hallway or next to a reading chair.
