The FLCS ceremonial matcha bowl began as a design exploration and evolved into a fusion of two classic shapes from my collection. This piece reimagines my signature cup form with traditional matcha proportions, paired with a foot from my micro series of shapes. Each cup is available in the two clay bodies I work with—white stoneware and speckled stoneware—and finished in one of three variations of white glaze. Traditionally, matcha bowls feature a design on the side facing the guest, allowing them to appreciate the piece while it rests on the table during the ceremony. I chose to reinterpret this by placing a small form on the bottom of the cup, creating a moment of surprise for the guest as the vessel is lifted and passed.
This edition includes 10 pieces: 4 in white stoneware and 6 in speckled stoneware. The exteriors are left unglazed and will develop a natural patina over time, particularly from matcha. This staining is intentional and considered part of the piece’s evolving character.
