Description

The Silo by Parafernalia is a multipurpose salt or condiment vessel made of cork with a stone lid for its use in the kitchen or wherever you’d want to organize things. Its design is made to facilitate the pinching of salt through its wide mouth, and the lid features a Teaspoon measure dimple on its underside to facilitate the quick measuring of quantities.

The choice of cork as a material for the vessel was made with its moisture wicking properties in mind. It was vaguely modelled after the shapes of antique briquetage evaporation vessels used to make salt and the shapes of underground silos, resulting in a modular language that facilitates the stacking and storing of the vessels and their use for different contents.

About Parafernalia Visit Showroom →

Parafernalia is a total design studio based between Monterrey and CDMX, formed by Sebastián Zorrilla and Genki Matsumura, which has been formally operating since 2021. The formation of the project was driven by a mutual interest in exploring and analyzing cultural contexts through material discourses that offer critical perspectives, executed in a conscious manner. The practice we have developed has been a process of empirical learning, involving getting in touch as much as possible with the processes involved in creating an object, and the factors that make it such, as well as the processes involved in the narrative development of an idea. All of this has been highly important for the way we work. Knowing not only the production limitations of a particular material but also the systems that govern it, the predetermined units and dimensions already commercially available, and even knowing the physical and chemical limitations of a specific material and how these can be used to your advantage. Our work lies in the reconsideration of scales, in order to subsequently try to articulate within the degrees of freedom that this affords us.
