Emirati Safeefah x Teak Wood
Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council and Noura Al Serkal intertwine their creative forces, revealing a resplendent jewellery box titled ‘Thelaal’. Imbued with the spirit of Emirati heritage, this captivating masterpiece revives the revered Mandoos box (traditional wooden box), a symbol of opulence and cherished treasures. The box is handcrafted with teak wood that is traditionally used to create the Mandoos boxes commonly used in Emirati homes to store precious and valuable items such as jewellery. The box design involves three wooden trays to create multiple layers to store one’s treasured items. To create a luxurious and contemporary design the box is adorned with matte brushed electroplated brass with cut outs inspired by palm tree shadows using Zari threads stitched in a way to represent a form of connection. The intricate Safeefah patterns are beautifully handwoven by skilled artisans, and then debossed on golden brass to complete the aesthetic of the hand-crafted masterpiece.
