Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council supports crafts and craft processes that are sustainable and relevant to the cultural identity of the MENASEA region. As advocates for sustainability in craft processes and materials, documentation of natural dyeing processes is published to the public to foster the engagement of emerging designers with organic materials and indigenous recipes.
Khose is the Emirati word for date palm fronds. Date palm fronds are one
of the main materials used in creating Emirati crafts. For this reason, Irthi Contemporary Craft Council commissioned The Alchemy of Dyeing to combine methods of documenting natural and sustainable recipes for dyeing
palm leaves.
The Alchemy of Dyeing is a research and educational platform conceived by the fashion designer Mehru Khan and artist Nahla Tabbaa that dives into the alchemy of color making, urban foraging, textile dyeing, chromophobia, taste making and other complexities around organic dyeing.
