Description

“Suprematist Four” is a series of four ceramic wall pieces inspired by the formal vocabulary of Suprematism. A square, a diamond, a cross, and a pair of rectangles – each tile features a singular black form, emerging from a smoky white background, rich with raku crackles and burn marks.
The tiles are made from stoneware and fired using the modern raku technique. In this process, each piece is removed from the kiln at bright red heat (around 1000°C) and placed into a container filled with combustible materials, where it undergoes post-firing reduction and smoking. The black shapes are not painted but formed through controlled smoke exposure during this stage. Each crack and shade is the result of fire, smoke, and chance – a collaboration between intention and elemental forces.
This work pays tribute to the legacy of Kazimir Malevich and the radical simplicity of geometric abstraction. At the same time, it invites the viewer to slow down, observe subtle textures, and consider the quiet symbolism of basic forms.

About Elena Yakimushkina Visit Showroom →

Born on the Baltic Coast, I've always drawn inspiration for my artwork from the serene beauty of northern nature. Ceramics, for me, is not just a craft; it's a lifelong passion and a medium for my creative expression. I am endlessly fascinated by the diverse forms, materials, and techniques that ceramics offer. One of the greatest joys of working with clay is the opportunity to experiment with firing techniques. I have a particular fondness for raku firing and wood firing, drawn to the hands-on nature of these methods and the element of serendipity they bring to the creative process. In each ceramic piece I create, I infuse a part of myself, establishing a profound connection between artist and art. Thank you for joining me on this artistic journey.
