This project is a new way to approach the surface texture of plastic from sustainability issues. I did various chemical experiments with plastic flakes and solvents. I found out about the problem when I visited the prototype factory. I saw so many plastic flakes thrown out of the garbage, not recycled. That is why I focus on this material. The result of the experiment is very interesting as a designer. It looks like melting toppings on pizza in the oven. To have a certain shape, I intentionally placed plastic flakes in the form of a square. I can see the surfaces of melting plastic flakes were twisted and intumescent. After evaporation, I attached two melted plates to express different volumes and textures on both sides. I used only 100% plastic flakes without any other material to harden for the “Melting series.” Each color pigment emphasized the attractive volume of the surface. This cannot be seen on the surface of existing plastic products and pretty much matches our daily lives.
The items in the Melting series are uniquely handmade and should be handled with the utmost care.
Especially, be careful not to bump into the protruding texture.
For indoor use only.
