Description

Mould making is fundamental to many manufacturing processes, both in small batch productions as in mass manufacturing. In those processes the mould is indispensable for bringing the desired object into existence. When the mould has been used to cast however many objects it is put to one side and the focus shifts onto the object it has created. The project explores ways to answer the question; Is it possible to extend the moulds active life with subtle interventions and by doing so, maintaining its value after the casting process by making it as desirable as the realised object?

The pice in question is a mould for a bookend. After desired number of bookends had been cast the mould was painted and glued together. The different colours indicate how the mould came a part to get the object, the bookend, out.

Theodora is an Icelandic product designer based in London. She holds a bachelor’s degree in product design from the Iceland Academy of the Arts and a master’s degree in Design Products from the Royal College of Art in London in 2015. Theodora’s work revolves around the narrative an object can inhabit and exploring ways of objectifying that narrative. She's interested in the way an object can act as documentation of it’s manufacturing process; a record of what went on between the machine, tools, craftsman and material as well as it can communicate it’s origin and former life. That often leads to discovery of unexpected qualities as well as it gives the user a subtle opportunity to reconsider our material world and explore value in a different way.

María Kristín Jónsdóttir
María Kristín is an Icelandic product designer and the head designer for STAKA. She has a keen passion for her cultural heritage and draws inspiration from nature, it’s forces, shapes and structures. María Kristín Jónsdóttir is the Editor-in-chief of HA – a magazine on Icelandic design and architecture that provides a forum for critical discussion on the cultural landscape. Also as a curator, creative director and designer. María Kristín’s work has been exhibited around Europe, in Spark|Design Space, Design Forum Finland and The Icelandic Museum of Design and Applied Art. She has been shortlisted for The Reykjavik Grapevine Design Awards for Thread (2012) and STAKA (2013). Her work has been covered in various Icelandic and international publications, including Fast Co Design, The Coolhunting and The Reykjavik Grapevine. Maria Kristin holds a B.A. in Product Design from The Iceland Academy of the Arts and studied Ethics and Philosophy at the University of Iceland and Goldsmithing at the Technical College Reykjavik. She currently lives and works in Reykjavik, Iceland.
