Description

Hazel Wave #4 floor lamp, designed by Darja Malesic is part of the Hazel Wave collection.

Hazel Wave lights take a rare and ancient handcraft practiced by a small number of Slovenian artisans, to create a series of lighting modules, that are at once visually seductive and eminently modernist.

The main material used is hazel wood stems that are cut from the hazel tree yearly as part of the pruning regime. The act of pruning these young branches encourages the plant to produce more stems, and the lifespan of the tree is extended. The practice is entirely circular and sustainable.

The construction follows a centuries-old basket weaving technique that is practiced in the designer’s home country of Slovenia. This ancient craft has been technically adapted in practice by local artisans to produce the more complex and sculptural forms of Hazel Wave lights.

The wooden forms are lightly softened by a series of elegant interwoven folds, which, like a pleated fabric, wrap and drape.

Ancient legends associated Hazel trees with magic, wisdom and insight.
By splitting strips of hazel from a rod, then turning them into ribbons and weaving them with traditional Slovenian wicker techniques into our unique hazel lights, we aim to bring seen and unseen qualities  into the ambiance of our homes.

About Darja Malesic Visit Showroom →

Darja Malesic is an independent designer based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. After gaining an MA in Fashion Womenswear at The Royal College of Art, London, Darja worked as a designer for over a decade in luxury fashion houses in Italy including Dolce Gabbana, before changing direction completely in order to focus on responsible design. Her creative work now spans a wide range of products from lighting and homeware to footwear, but crucially explores the possibilities offered by Slovenian wicker craft and weaving, often combined with modern engineering techniques. Darja’s work channels traditional craft techniques into contemporary design, and demonstrates sustainable practices, and ethical production. Her pieces frequently combine fluid forms and sculptural reference and use completely natural local materials, such as hazel wood, willow, corn husk and rye straw. Since starting her own company in 2018, Darja has received several design awards from the Museum for Architecture and Design, Slovenia, and her products have been shown at many international design exhibitions including Design Weeks in Milan, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, and the Netherlands (Dutch Design Week).
