The Claire lamp, designed by French artist Vital Lainé, is an expression of elegance—a minimalist floor light carefully crafted from poplar wood.
Rediscovering a material as common as wood is quite beautiful and poetic to me. Exploring it through its nature and history as a living material is a meaningful approach, where listening to the material is crucial. This listening begins with the selection of wood, in situ.
The sawmill serves as a source of inspiration where the material actively participates in the creative process.
Among a multitude of local wood species and a variety of rejects, an attractive potential hides within certain pieces and their flaws. The tree in the form of a plank exposes the fragility, history, and beauty of the wood, making it a witness and reflection of its territory. This territorial anchoring of the material allows for opening a sensitive dialogue with it.
The history of each piece, each reject, their shapes, and the diversity of wood species foster the birth of an esoteric exchange with the material, an exchange translated into a mental schema of the future object. This respect for the material gives the object a personal interpretation of the material, placing it as the master of the design through the designer’s eye. The formal and dimensional aspect of the object is then guided by the nature of the chosen pieces. The purity of the object, both functional and visual, is central and allows for highlighting the material and its imperfections.
‘Bois Sensible’ aims to convey this exchange between the designer and the material through everyday furniture. The user’s perception of the object is intended to be free, allowing them to approach it in a sensitive or purely functional way. The beauty of an inhabited space is translated by the poetry of the objects that compose it. Allowing their materials to speak is essential.
