Description

This sculptural lidded vessel by Elena Yakimushkina is a standout piece in the “On the Rocks” series. It embodies artistic expression and functional design. Its lid, decorated with an ash glaze, resembles a precious gemstone, adding refined elegance to its rough, angular form.

Crafted using the kurinuki technique, the vase is carved from a single block of clay, resulting in a raw and organic aesthetic that celebrates imperfection. Wood-fired to achieve a rich and unpredictable surface, the glaze reveals unique marks of fire. One side captivates with a vivid burst of purple glaze—a striking detail that draws the eye—while the others offer natural textures and tones, each telling its own story.

This lidded vessel can function as a small vase or a sculptural centerpiece. Its multifaceted design lets you rotate it, revealing a different perspective each time. Whether displayed independently or as part of an arrangement, this piece brings character and intrigue to any space.

The vase was hand-built and decorated using a combination of shino and natural ash glazes. It was then finished by wood firing at 1300°C, which gave it a unique texture and coloration.

About Elena Yakimushkina Visit Showroom →

Born on the Baltic Coast, I've always drawn inspiration for my artwork from the serene beauty of northern nature. Ceramics, for me, is not just a craft; it's a lifelong passion and a medium for my creative expression. I am endlessly fascinated by the diverse forms, materials, and techniques that ceramics offer. One of the greatest joys of working with clay is the opportunity to experiment with firing techniques. I have a particular fondness for raku firing and wood firing, drawn to the hands-on nature of these methods and the element of serendipity they bring to the creative process. In each ceramic piece I create, I infuse a part of myself, establishing a profound connection between artist and art. Thank you for joining me on this artistic journey.
