Relief (from the Italian relievare, meaning ‘to raise’) refers to a sculptural technique in which figures project from a supporting background, usually a flat surface.
This body of work by ZEYNEP BOYAN integrates the fundamentals of relief, with sculpted elements remaining attached to a solid background made of terracotta stoneware clay. The sizes are classified based on their height, shape, free-form attachments, and degree of detachment from the background.
The series is inspired by various objects and styles, particularly the black iron and ceramic tile stoves (kachelofen) that served as the primary masonry heating system during the German Renaissance.
Please note that this piece is glazed internally and is watertight.
