Description

The “Fertility Goddess Vase” is part of Natalia Triantafylli’s collection, “Chimeras and Hybrids”, where the designer combines ceramics with rapid prototyping mediums such as 3D printing and 3D scanning (photogrammetry). The way she works with the digital parts of the piece is very much hands-on. She doesn’t 3D model them, but instead uses clay to shape the forms. These clay forms are later digitized using photogrammetry (a process that enables Triantafylli to create a 3d model out of images).

The collection was inspired by the ornate elements of mass-produced, Victorian furniture – Egyptian sphinxes that act as bench handles and elaborate lamp poles which harken back to classicism.

”As a Greek person, I am used to living amongst the ruins of past grandeur, so I was intrigued by the paradox of the Victoriana, where the latest means of industrial production were expressed through revivalism; by combining an ancient craft with contemporary ways of making I aim to create another loop of revivalism.”

About Natalia Triantafylli Visit Showroom →

Natalia Triantafylli is a Greek designer and maker based in London. She holds an MA from the Royal College of Art in Design Products (class of 2021), where she was awarded with a full scholarship by the Burberry Design Foundation. With a background in design and ceramics her work is characterized by an animistic perspective towards 'things'. She explores schemas such as luxury, fetish and wonder for their power to create gateways to imaginary worlds. She uses these constructions to point to the rarity of the mundane, concluding that there is no need for a new reality but for a fresh pair of eyes.
