Description

The Mantis Lamp is a sculptural light that brings together industrial precision, hand-crafted detail, and collaborative storytelling. It was conceived as a reflection on movement, emotion, and the intersection of function and art. At its core, the piece explores how layered craft processes and cultural narratives can coexist within a single object.

The lamp combines brushed aluminium, opal blown glass, and a hand-embroidered specialist paper shade. The brushed aluminium structure is laser-cut and machine-formed in our studio, provides a sleek, contemporary base and acts as the architectural foundation. The opal blown glass bulb, crafted by skilled glassblowers, introduces a diffused glow and sculptural softness that contrasts with the metal’s crisp precision.

Created in collaboration with artist Nicole Chui, the paper shade features expressive, freeform embroidery using metallic gold and silver Perle threads. Nicole’s technique – marked by bold, layered stitches, draws inspiration from the chaotic, fluid movements found in football. Her embroidery adds a visceral, emotional layer, transforming the lamp into a textile canvas of motion and energy.

Fabricated and assembled in our shared workshop, the lamp integrates hand-embroidery with structural design. When switched off, it stands as a poised sculptural form. Once lit, the lamp animates the embroidery, casting textured shadows and bringing the stitched patterns to life. A light touch sets it swaying echoing the motion that inspired it.

Made as both a functional object and an artistic expression, the Mantis Lamp invites interaction, reflection, and a deeper appreciation for collaboration, materiality, and craft.
