There are about 3 million lobster traps in Maine’s waters and more than 100,000 are lost each year. Lost or abandoned lobster, crab and other traps plague coastal waters around the globe putting pressure on a number of already stressed ocean populations. Fresh Catch is a series conceived from derelict lobster traps salvaged off the coast of Maine. The traps are collected by way of on-site foraging expeditions along the coast of New England. They are carefully deconstructed, then organically rearranged and assembled into one-of-a-kind, sculptural pieces of furniture.
Lauren Goodman is an artist and designer who embraces responsive approaches to the local environment and the communities that steward and neglect it. Developing pieces entirely from waste and discarded objects, her minimalist, delicate design sensibility subtly draws attention to alternative material resources, whilst infusing poetry into the upcycling dialogue. Goodman is committed to educating artists and designers on the possibilities of a practice driven by waste reduction and strives to find balance between user, product and environment. Through this process, she seeks non-exploitative design solutions that foreground local communities and reduce environmental harm.
This Shelf is made from a salvaged lobster trap that has been welded and has had a powder coated finish applied.
