Description

The Splitted Stool by Teun Zwets is a compact yet striking example of his instinctive approach to design and making. Part of the Splitted collection, the stool is created from Douglas Fir beams that are split with an axe, exposing irregular textures and the lively grain of the wood. These broken fragments are fitted back together into a sturdy, functional form, with the joins and surface variations kept visible as an honest record of the process. Once assembled, the stool is meticulously sanded and coated in a high gloss lacquer that enhances both the colour and the tactile quality of the surface. The result is a piece that is robust enough for everyday use yet sculptural in its presence. The origins of the Splitted series lie in a moment of discovery, when Zwets noticed the beauty of split firewood and began experimenting with transforming it into objects, first making a vase, then chairs, tables, and stools. The stool reflects the immediacy and energy of this way of working, shaped not by a predetermined design but by the forms that emerged during making. Presented at Dutch Design Week, it embodies Zwets’s philosophy of thinking through making, letting the material guide the outcome. Each stool is unique, carrying its own pattern of splits, textures, and colours, celebrating the unpredictable beauty that comes from working directly with wood. Made to order in any color.

About Teun Zwets Visit Showroom →

Teun Zwets (1992) is a Dutch designer who prefers to work without a fixed plan. His approach is characterized by spontaneity, intuition, and a hefty dose of boldness. What makes Teun unique is his unguarded way of designing: he dives into his workshop and lets himself be guided by what he encounters. His creations often arise from impulsive discoveries and unexpected material combinations. This freedom results in pieces full of energy and playfulness, where he finds beauty in things others might overlook.
