Description

“Prickless Pear” is a sculpture in green marble, that belongs to OPUNTIA collection with motto “Please do touch!”.

OPUNTIA is a collection of sculptural furnishings by marble atelier on·entropy, that invites us to pause and experience the plasticity in contemporary marble design. Originally inspired by the cactus plant, with its distinct harmonic irregularity and fluidity, on·entropy has conceived each leaf of the sculptures as a free, hand-drawn circular plane. This 2D, planar surface then acquires volume and evolves into an extra-terrestrially shaped sculpture.

These two, the organic arrangement of the natural world and the essence of the macro-cosmic form, are married into unique sculptural furnishings. Designed with introspection and with exquisite craftsmanship at heart, the user is encouraged to slow down and engage their senses.

The sculpture comes in seven pieces (leaves). The user is invited to assemble it and experience the plasticity of marble. Each piece is expertly handcrafted by the sculptor in natural marble, therefore subtle differences may occur.

About the designer

on∙entropy is a marble atelier established in 2009 in Athens and London. Marble, an archetypal Greek material, takes on an unconventional role in on∙entropy\'s designs; they encapsulate the contradiction of being heavy and compact and at the same time vulnerable, fragile and translucent. Its diverse character is the core of the atelier’s founding mission: to experiment with marble and its entropy; its transformation potential & inherent limitations. The result is the craftsmanship of intricate and delicate creations, evolving its diachronic qualities in an imaginative & contemporary way. Created and run by sisters Niki and Zoe Moskofoglou, on• entropy is the fruit of 40 year family affair with marble in Greece. Niki Moskofoglou is an architect with an academic training in Design. Her work demonstrates an architectural detailing and instinct of how Space and Object can surpass mere function. Zoe Moskofoglou is a civil engineer with expertise in Sustainable Heritage. She cultivates her passion in the marriage of cultural and natural environment through academic research in Cultural Landscapes.

New Solid is a vision to feel and live with art. It is the first show of Casa Nueva, a livable gallery space and apartment hotel initiated by designers River Valadez and Sebastián Arroyo Hoebens, built on the idea that art can be inhabited. We invite visitors to participate in the dialogue among transdisciplinary works from the contemporary art and design scene. It concerns functional art designed and conceived by artists from two magnificent cities, Mexico City and New York, in a correlation founded in geometry, technology, and crafts. The artworks, bliss for the contemplative eye and a joy to use, will invite the beholder to examine the floating and multidimensional character of concepts such as mass, volume, or weight. The location, equipped as a functional living space, can be found in the historical center of Mexico City. The event will be part of the Design Week Mexico festivities in partnership with Adorno, acting as the international design and logistics platform, as well as Ángulo Cero, an Art Gallery with astonishing designs located in Mexico City, and with the support of Yunuen Sariego, promoter and curator of contemporary art based in Mexico City.
