Kugri chairs by B.C. Joshua are made to resemble early forms of seating where materials reflected their immediate surroundings (stone and wood). Kugri is a Ghanaian term from the Nangodi region meaning the earth spriting-stone. They have vine like back rests made from scots pine which protude from the back as if engulfed by the stone like paper. This Kugri Chair was made as a dining chair, which is reflected in its tall back. The stone has been painted green using Lakewood natural paints and has been sanded down in various areas to reveal the newspaper base underneath.
The stones are made from a material called GyPulp (recycled paper mixed with salvaged and ground plasterboard) and are built around a wooden and wired armature, making for a very strong base.
