ÄTHER explores the act of collecting and preserving — inspired by Renaissance-era cabinets of curiosities and contemporary laboratory aesthetics.
Enclosed within a laboratory-style specimen jar, a tinted T4 fluorescent tube glows as a relic of obsolete technology. The piece echoes both scientific preservation practices and museological display strategies. By isolating the fluorescent in a sealed environment, it highlights its transition from an everyday light source to a fragile, archival object.
As fluorescent lighting phases out globally, ÄTHER points to how rapidly functional materials become cultural and historical residues.
Constructed using fluorescent lights marked by the designer as “endangered,” the work repositions them not for their function, but for their status as disappearing industrial materials.
