Duffy London, “Abyss Horizon” – A Study of Depth and Our Perception of It

Duffy London produces furniture designs that are ideas-based, combining art and function, and playing with the concepts of gravity, geography and optical illusion. All their pieces are handmade in their London studio by a skilled team of craftspeople using sustainable woods from Forestry Stewardship Council-managed forests and other eco-friendly materials and mediums.

Duffy London: A Globally-Acclaimed Studio

The studio’s works are limited-edition and divided into core collections, including “Abyss”, “Solo” (which contains individual statement and sculptural pieces), “Megalith” and “Up Balloon.”  

Duffy London’s pieces have been featured at Art Basel, Art Miami, and 100% Design London. Perhaps the greatest accolade was the 2019 acquisition of an “Abyss” table by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at The Louvre in Paris to become part of the permanent National French collection.

With the “Abyss Horizon” coffee table, light plays an important role in creating a mesmerising three-dimensional canvas that reflects our own perception of water and the change in its colour at different depths. This is achieved through the interplay between layers of natural birchwood colouration and blue glass sculpted into an organic shape. Added to the flowing design, the perceived change in colour brings to mind images of oceanic topography.

For the 2023 edition, three curved legs support a dramatic, contoured base section that appears to collapse downwards into the floor. By creating an abyss around the table’s edges, we focus our senses on the colossal hole at the centre of the abyss.

Each piece is handcrafted in their London studios in a limited edition of 25 pieces, with two sizes and two finishes to choose from: birchwood or white Carrara marble. This is the first time the London studio is offering the white marble finish for one of their products.
