Biomimicry in furniture design beckons a deeper comprehension of nature’s form and functionality. Zwampen, a piece crafted from mycelium, proudly holds the accolade from Ung Svensk Form 2023. This piece reflects the designer’s journey of drawing inspiration from ecosystems and nature’s ingenious solutions. At a glance, it evokes reminiscences of Eero Aarnio’s iconic collection, conjuring images of Ball Chair variations sprouting from trees. The armchair’s plush, circular design is inspired by the inherent aesthetics of mushrooms, boasting similarities in wood and mycelium textures. This form harmoniously aligns with the mycelium’s biological attributes and human ergonomics, casting a futuristic silhouette that piques curiosity about its organic manufacturing process.

Beyond aesthetics, this furniture embodies environmental stewardship, utilizing carbon dioxide during its growth. Its composition? A blend of fungal spores, wood shavings, flour, water, and the essence of time.

The mycelium growing process is finished and cant produce fungi. Inner wooden reinforcement holding heavy weights.

About Olle Sahlqvist Visit Showroom →

Olle Sahlqvist studied for a bachelor’s in product design at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg. In his degree project named Biomimicry Furniture Design Sahlqvist addressed the climate crisis, which we are dealing with in different ways on an individual level. In Sahlqvist’s opinion, we need to create a stronger relationship with nature to become more empathetic to it. By getting closer to nature's materials and expressions we will become involved in nature's well-being. In 2022 Sahlqvist was represented in the Ex-Works 2022 exhibition at the Museum of Furniture Studies with two objects from the project Invite Nature. The Bark stool taken over by nature's forgotten material, the bark which defends the trees' inner structure. The Fungi shelf with walnut back and fungi shelving bark boards formed after the mushroom's biological structure.
