Description

A series of works that explore the aesthetics of woven canvas and the legacy of abstract painting, freely stretched on aluminium shelves. At first, the hyper-visible paint brush strokes and colourful patterns overshadow the finer woven structures. But slowly, fragile and unsettled parts of open threads appear, hanging freely in the middle of the construction. Designer Evelyn Sitter started the work by investigating the construction of canvas, the base of every painting; an iconic, yet underrated fabric. By painting simultaneously during the weaving process, she interrelates those media.

The works are woven by hand on a countermarch-loom from the 19th century without any use of electricity. Sitter’s version of the canvas has different densities in the warp, using white cotton and shades of grey and a strong carpet warp. The interplay of color is created during the weaving process and not after. By colouring the warp threads before weaving them, shades and colours can evolve and interact. Contrasting materials and open parts left in warp and weft give a feeling of a deconstructed fragile composition.

About Evelyn Sitter Visit Showroom →

Evelyn Sitter is a textile artist and designer based in Berlin. In her studio practice she constructs large-scale weavings simultaneously with paintings: On her countermarch-loom from the 19th century she paints the warp threads during the weaving process directly on the loom. In her process all steps are done by hand, taking time for each string of mostly 1000 warp yarns. Deconstruction, reversal of technical sequences guide her process. Open strands of yarn make the work appear more delicate and fragile. Her work is for all to touch, a tactile experience that is allowed to age, change, show injuries and scars, and respond to the hands of visitors. Her works has been shown internationally in design festivals like Collectible Design Fair, Dutch Design Week and Beirut Design Week, as well as museum shows like original bauhaus - the centenary exhibition, Bauhaus Archive e.V. at Berlische Galerie, museum for art, architecture and photography. Evelyn Sitter graduated from Berlin University of the Arts in 2013. After living and working in Arnhem, Paris and Berlin, she founded her studio with her weaving practise, where she also works on collaborative projects and commissions.
