The Splitted Dining Chair by Teun Zwets is a striking example of craftsmanship and intuitive design. Part of his celebrated Splitted collection, the chair is made from Douglas Fir beams that are split with an axe, revealing natural textures and expressive wood grain. These fragments are reassembled into a functional form, with the raw joins and irregular surfaces left visible as part of its character. Once built, the chair is carefully sanded and finished in a high gloss lacquer, enhancing both the tactile surface and the depth of colour. The result is an object that is both raw and refined, sculptural yet practical. Zwets works in a process he calls thinking through making, allowing the material and the moment to guide each decision rather than starting from a fixed plan. The Splitted series began when he noticed the beauty of split firewood and started experimenting with turning those shapes into objects, first a vase, then a chair, and later an entire collection. The dining chair reflects this origin, retaining the energy of its creation while offering stability and comfort. Presented at Dutch Design Week, it captures the balance between spontaneous expression and careful craftsmanship. Each chair is unique, carrying the marks of its making and celebrating the unpredictable beauty that comes from working directly with wood. On request, the chair can be finished in any color.
