Description

Reduced forms create fascinating light sculptures, a play with reflection, light and shadow. Formally very clearly sculptural in its effect. The luminaire series, “Shadow”, plays with the effects of light, shadow and reflection. It almost succeeded in squaring the circle again….

Just think of the tea trolley by Alvar Aalto or the marshmallow sofa by George Nelson. The circular surface as a design element exerts a great fascination. The four circular surfaces form a “square” which is both lampshade and base at the same time. When the lamp is on, the circular areas conjure up a beautiful shadow ornament on the floor or stand.

In one of the coloured versions (fluorescent) another aspect comes into play: the light conductivity of Plexiglas, which causes the edges of the Plexiglas to glow in back light. In other words, depending on the daylight situation, the lamp also glows when switched off.

About the designer


Andreas Berlin

\"The point of view with which one looks at a product leads to different demands, so the point of view determines the objective of a product.\" Andreas Berlin studied at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences, where Dieter Rams also studied at the time. His studies were influenced by the independent teaching of the Bauhaus. \"I am very happy about this tradition and influence, but when I realized that the sentence \"form follows function\" can also be reversed, an additional valuable potential in the creative process developed for me.\" \"Design is the search for a new way of looking at a product and the development of a feeling and logic for the formal and technical implementation. The decisive factor is to what extent the idea can exert a lasting fascination\". After his studies Andreas worked as a freelance designer for high-quality furniture brands such as Dieter Knoll or Leolux. Some of his works have been awarded design prizes. In the meantime, Andreas also returned to the University of Applied Sciences to teach the Semester Project Furniture Design. During this time Andreas met the artist Sabine Dehnel, to whom he is now married. They now live in Berlin and share the studio space. The proximity to art has also influenced Andreas in his work as a designer. Since 2016 Andreas has been realizing an exclusive collection under his artist name Andreas Berlin, consisting of unique pieces and small series of extraordinary \"design objects\" located at the interface between design and art. These objects usually have an elaborate and sophisticated construction that only insiders know about. Since graduating with a degree in engineering Andreas loves to research and design. It seems as if he is bored by a technically easy to solve project. Nevertheless, what matters most to him is that his works have a consistent concept and hold a lasting fascination.

Presenting “PROXIMITY”, a collection created in collaboration with Southern Sweden Design Days showcasing a selection of new work from ten designers and studios. As a whole, the collection contemplates the notion of proximity, interconnection, and belonging. Whether through contemporary references to traditional crafts techniques; the use of locally sourced materials such as wool, lichen, steel, and wood; or playful visualisations of the notion itself, the selected pieces illustrate the importance of closeness, interconnection, and kinship in uncertain times. Featuring pieces by Andrea Santivanez, Andréason & Leibel, Ebba Lindgren, Förstberg Ling, Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir, Lab La Bla, Lisa Darland, Louise Hederström, Moa Lönn, and Studio M. Organised by Form/Design Center in Malmö, Sweden, Southern Sweden Design Days is an annual event currently in its second edition, which highlights sustainability, collaboration, development, and innovation in design. This year’s theme, as described by the event organisers, “[reflects] on the notion of being close – the connection between people, cities, countries, species, professions, etc”. The physical exhibition of “PROXIMITY” will take place at Lokstallarna, Södra Bulltoftavägen 51, 212 22 Malmö from 19 - 22 May 2022.
